Government provides partial funding for projects undertaken by Grama Panchayats and Urban Councils in waste management as listed below.

The Scheme has the following components.

  •  Pre-Monsoon cleaning
  • Solid Waste Processing Plant and its modification
  • Source Level Treatment of waste
  • Liquid Waste Management including Septage Treatment Plant
  • IEC activities including workshop, R&D and capacity building
  • Solid waste collection, transportation facilities and equipment for waste handling
  • Initial handholding support for SHGs/small scale entrepreneurs involved in waste management supporting services
  • Study, Research on Material use and Waste, Policy Standards and guidelines for Solid and liquid waste management & other innovations in sanitation.
  • Mechanization of septage management
  • Administrative cost

Pre-monsoon activities are being spearheaded by the local bodies to control the spread of pandemic and other infectious diseases in the state during the months of June-July. Awareness campaigns are being conducted through audio-visual and print media to create habits suitable for scientific waste management among the people.

In order to facilitate the implementation of source level waste management projects, Suchitwa Mission has empanelled service-providers and these agencies are providing support to the LSGIs in establishing source level treatment facilities through the projects envisaged by them.

The major activities undertaken under Suchitwa Keralam scheme are enhancing the infrastructure capability for source level treatment of biodegradable waste along with door-to-door collection of non-biodegradables and their recycling.

Some activities taken up under the scheme are given below.

  • Construction of Sanitary Complexes in Public Places, Libraries and major tourist spots located in Grama Panchayath area including Take a Break toilet
  • Reconstruction of Toilets and onsite treatment systems damaged due to floods in schools/other water logged/coastal areas in rural areas
  • Solid Waste Processing Plant and its modification, MCF, RRF Equipments for waste handling, Plastic Shredding Units, Removal of legacy waste etc. and facilitation of Green facility centres in LSGIs
  • Setting up of institutional STP (LSGs, govt./aided educational institutions) modification/renovation of existing plants (composting/bio-methanation) both operational and non-operational at institutional and community level owned by the Local Governments, and installation of Mini Material Collection facilities in Govt./Aided Schools.
  • Liquid Waste Management including septage/sewage treatment plant, Mechanisation/ensuring Safety of septage management, Institutional STPs, Liquid waste treatment projects for rejuvenation of canals and rivers
  • Initial handholding support for SHGs/Start Ups, Haritha Karma Senas for promoting green initiatives, and waste management supporting services, Study, Monitoring and Evaluation and other innovations in Sanitation and waste management, Awards/Incentives and other recognitions
  • Disaster related Sanitation and Waste Management
  • Conversion of leach pit to Septic tank/Bio digester for Individual Household Latrine (IHHL)
  • Incentive systems to enable acceptance of Waste Management Plants in locality
  • Performance incentive for excellence in Waste Management

In urban areas

  • Setting up of construction and demolition waste plants
  • equipment for waste handling, removal of legacy waste and biomining and support to SBM (U) SWM components, motorised and battery operated vehicles for Haritha Karma Sena and other waste management.
  • Mechanisation of the collection/transportation/disposal of human waste from septic tanks and elsewhere, providing personal protective equipment and  mobile septage treatment systems
