Harita Karma Sena is a collective of workers from the kudumbashree network, working for local self governments for the collection, sorting, and delivery of inorganic waste to authorized agencies for processing and end disposal. Established in 2017 as a micro-initiative of Kudumbashree under the Navakerala Karma Paddhathi, the following are the primary activities of Harita Karma Sena:

The Days of Addressing the Waste Disposal Challenge

In 2005, organic waste collection plants known as Clean Well Units had been established to collect organic waste and deliver it to processing centers operated by local self-governments. However, the shortage of centralized bio-waste treatment facilities affected the sustainability of the intervention. Subsequently, initiatives were introduced to promote on-site organic waste treatment and the collection of inorganic waste. These efforts were spearheaded by Green Service Providers, led by Kudumbashree.

In 2017, the formation of Harita Karma Sena was initiated under the Nava Kerala Karma Paddhathi in collaboration with local self-governments. Since then, significant progress has been made in waste management practices.

Harita Karma Sena operates as a micro-enterprise within the framework of Kudumbashree., There are more than 36,000 Harita Karma Sena workers across all local self-governments in Kerala leveraging the knowledge and skills acquired through Kudumbashree and training as green workers.

What began as a grassroots initiative has evolved into a formidable force driving positive change in waste management practices across Kerala. In addition to their waste disposal activities, today, the Harita Karma Sena engages in diverse small-scale enterprises, including:

Harita Karma Sena embodies principles of integrity, cooperation, community, and social responsibility. A constant endeavour has been to get the larger community to recognise their role and contribution to a clean, healthy and hygienic society, and to ensure that the dignity of their profession is acknowledged and respected.

In collaboration with local self-government bodies, elected representatives, and the New Kerala Mission, Harita Karma Sena plays a crucial role in removing approximately ten thousand tonnes of inorganic waste from homes and public spaces every month. Their activities contribute immensely to the preservation of Kerala’s soil, water, and air quality, safeguarding the environment for future generations.
