NITI Ayog published the poverty status based on a multi-dimensional poverty index where Kerala stands first with only 0.55% population as poor. A massive programme to identify the extremely poor in Kerala through a scientific and participatory process under the leadership of the local governments was undertaken in 2021, as the first step in an ambitious programme to eradicate extreme poverty by 2025. It identified 64006 families as extremely poor. Micro plans have been prepared for each of these families and a multi-departmental effort to address their concerns including providing entitlements, food, health care and social security safe nets is underway. At the end of the first phase of the extreme poverty eradication programme in November 2023, nearly 50% of these families had moved out of extreme poverty. As part of the ‘Avakasam Athivegam’ campaign, rights endorsing documents like Aadhaar Card, Ration Card, Election ID and emergency services like Health Insurance, and Social Security Pension were provided to 21263 families. The Government of Kerala through a multisectoral and ‘whole of government’ approach aims to eradicate poverty for the remaining ‘athidardrar’ families by November 1st, 2024.
