Kerala, long celebrated as a model for India in education and social progress, is now making history once again. The state has reached a decisive moment by successfully eliminating extreme poverty — a goal envisioned and implemented through the Extreme Poverty Eradication Project, announced in 2021 by the second Cabinet led by Chief Minister Shri Pinarayi Vijayan.
Through a comprehensive poverty identification process carried out by Local Self-Government Institutions (LSGIs), 64,006 extremely poor families were identified across the state. Individual micro-plans were then prepared for each family. Under the leadership of the Local Self-Government Department, and with the coordinated efforts of local bodies, various government departments, missions, voluntary organizations, and the active participation of the people, Kerala ensured food security, healthcare, livelihood opportunities, and safe housing, enabling these families to lead a life of dignity.
The project was implemented in three phases:
Phase 1: Ensured access to food and healthcare services.
Phase 2: Secured sustainable livelihood and income sources.
Phase 3: Provided safe and permanent housing.
This historic mission was further strengthened through campaigns and initiatives such as “Avakasham Athivegam” (Right on Fast Track), “Ujjivanam” (Rejuvenation), and “Manassodithiri Mannu” (Land with Compassion), which helped provide land, housing, ownership documents, educational support, and free travel facilities to the beneficiaries. Public participation, determination, and coordinated action have been the foundation of this extraordinary achievement — a matter of pride for every Malayali.
On November 1, 2025 (Kerala Piravi Day), a grand public meeting will be held at the Central Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram, where Hon. Chief Minister Shri Pinarayi Vijayan will officially declare Kerala as a State Free from Extreme Poverty. The function will be presided over by Hon. Minister for Local Self-Government, Excise and Parliamentary Affairs, Shri M. B. Rajesh, in the presence of Hon. Speaker Shri A. N. Shamseer, all Ministers, the Leader of the Opposition, MPs, MLAs, representatives of local bodies, department heads, film personalities, officials, and the general public.
Kerala is thus witnessing yet another proud and historic milestone — reaffirming its commitment to inclusive growth, social justice, and human dignity.
