Launched in 2014, the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) stands as a landmark initiative, with the primary objective of achieving an Open Defecation Free India. Kerala successfully attained the Open Defecation Free (ODF) status in November 2016. The ongoing second phase of SBM(G) in the state is geared towards sustaining the ODF status and improving the solid-liquid waste management facilities in rural areas. The scheme period is up to 2024–25.

This scheme is implemented in convergence with other funding sources like the 15th FC Grant, MGNREGS, MP/MLA Fund, and CSR Funding. SBM’s share of the scheme is met by the central and state governments in the ratio 60:40. Suchitwa mission is the nodal agency and the local governments are the implementing entities. Improving bio and non bio waste management including ensuring door to door collection on non bio waste and coordinating the full cycle of waste segregation, processing and management is priority in Kerala.

The focus of the Swachh bharat mission now includes liquid waste management. The State has attempted to utilise the resources of SBM – G for identifying the clusters for setting up FSTPs strategically, so as to be able to service all of the State. An initiative involving the Education department is underway for community based soakpits.

The interventions by the State have been rewarded by the successful delisting of polluted river stretches by the CPCB.
