Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs was launched on 2nd  October 2014. Suchitwa Mission is  the Nodal agency for implementing Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) in Kerala.

Key outputs for ULBs:  

(i) Improvement of sanitation infrastructure and services 

(ii)Improvement of urban sanitation and used water infrastructure, management, and systems 

(iii) Strengthening of IEC interventions and institutional capacities

As far as sewage and sullage are concerned, the State has a very robust coverage of septic tanks, but does not have commensurate FSTPs. Setting up treatment facilities including subterranean biodigesters and mobile FSTPs are being earnestly attempted, notwithstanding the challenge of population density, topography and entrenched local resistance and agitation.

SBM Urban Phase-1

The first phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban with an objective of started in 2014 with the objective of achieving 100% Open Defecation Free (ODF) status,ensuring 100% scientific Solid Waste Management (SWM), and behavior change through ‘Jan Andolan’, by 2nd October 2019. Due to unexpected occurrence of the COVID pandemic the mission was extended up to march 2023.Numerous projects related to waste management and sanitation were undertaken and completed in Kerala during this span. Building of household latrines,distribution of household composting devices/biogas plants,construction of community level composting devices/biogas plants,construction of public toilets, construction of MCF etc were done as a part of the SBM -phase 1.

SBM Phase-2

The second phase of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban will be in force for five years, from 1st October 2021 to 1st October 2026. SBM-U 2.0 is to be implemented with a vision of achieving Garbage free status for all cities.
