Local self-government system in Kerala, after 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments
- 1994: state assembly passes the new Panchayati Raj Act and Kerala Municipal Rules.
- 1995: The first elections conducted as per the new rules and constitutional amendments
- Corporations and municipalities in cities and towns
- The jurisdiction of District Panchayat in the rural areas of the districts
- 3 to 12 Block panchayats were formed in every district as per the population and area.
- Grama Panchayats within the boundaries of blocks.
- 2-10 panchayats within the territory of blocks
- Each tier of local government is independent
- Each local self-government is divided into wards/ constituencies.
- Each of these wards elects a representative
- In 1994, 33% reservation for women at all levels and this was extended to 50% reservation in 2010.
- Various institutions and officials transferred to Local Self-Governments
- At least one seat was reserved for SC/ST in tribal area category as per their population size. Out of this one third is reserved for women from those categories
- Reservation wards/ positions change every 5year
- The elections are on Political lines.
